On July 15th the championship game of the 3rd American Football World Cup was played at Todoroki Athletics Stadium.
@Japan, the two-time winners of the tournament looking to three-peat, and the United States, the original home of the sport, faced off for the top
spot in international American Football competition.
For a while there was concern that unstable weather caused by a recent typhoon could affect the game, but just before kickoff time the clouds began to part and the curtain rose on the championship game at 3:10pm.
Early in the game the United States scored first with a touchdown. But in the second quarter Japan tied the score with a touchdown of their
own, and then took the lead with a field goal. The first half ended with a score of 10-7.
The United States caught up again in the 3rd quarter, but in the 4th Japan took the lead again with another touchdown. In the final three minutes of regulation time the U.S. tied the game again
with another touchdown, bringing the two teams back to square one.
In overtime play the United States made a field goal, but not to be outdone
so did Japan. The tide of the game swung back and forth until finally, with another field
goal by the U.S., the score stood at 20-23. Though appearing in the tournament for the first time, the United States
had won the championship.
When the game ended, the approximately ten thousand spectators showered the athletes with applause for a hard-fought game truly worthy of the World Championship of American Football.
The previous day games to decide 5th and 3rd place had been played at Kawasaki Stadium. South Korea beat France for 5th place, and Germany won out over Sweden to claim 3rd.
RESULTS:
@World Champion: United States
@2nd Place: Japan
@3rd Place: Germany
@4th Place: Sweden
@5th Place: South Korea
@6th Place: France
