| Municipalized in 1924 with merely 50,000 residents at first, the City of Kawasaki has grown rapidly to become a top metropolis in Japan with a population of nearly 1.4 million. Kawasaki has played a vital role in Japan's industrial development as the center of the Keihin Industrial Zone during its post-war period of high economic growth. Subsequently, it has turned into a principal industrial city; hosting a number of research & development organizations, as well as global business entities with cutting-edge environmental technology that play vital roles in modern society. From a different aspect, our community is blessed with rich natural areas, especially the Tama River and the Tama Hills. Resources in culture and the arts, including music, films, and athletics, are proud representations of the city. Musicians, artists, athletes, and teams are among the talents that Kawasaki carries to both the domestic and international arena. With such unique features and characteristics, Kawasaki is making greater efforts to become a city of advanced science and technology while also maintaining and protecting the global environment. Moreover, the city administration is becoming fully enriched with music, film and sports events as it is also actively promoting urban development, so that it shall continue to be a city that our residents are proud to call home. Kawasaki will continue its progress with the "Kawasaki Revival Frontier Plan," which is designed to help maintain safe and comfortable lifestyles of its residents. There is also progress to implement "Positive Cycle Urban Development," wherein various initiatives mutually enhance each other to result in the formulation of new values and attractive characteristics. I hope this booklet will provide many of you with better understanding of the vitality that our "Energetic Kawasaki" enjoys, along with the very unique features of our seven administrative wards. |
