The Kawasaki Coastal Area, a center of advanced environmental technology with countless global high-tech corporations and research &anp; development institutes

Found at the nerve center of the Keihin Industrial Zone, Kawasaki City has helped spur on Japan's industrial development and has, in the past, overcome many challenges with pollution. Now it is rapidly transforming into a city of advanced technology that gathers together global high-tech companies and research & development facilities. By utilizing this knowledge and experience, Kawasaki is taking various measures to protect our precious environment across the globe.

Kawasaki City and the Tokyo Electric Power Company will collaboratively build Japan's largest Solar Power Plant in Coastal Area of Kawasaki (plans to begin operation in 2011). SAN-EI Regulator Co., Tokyo Plant, a facility that uses discarded polyester-coated paper, which is difficult to recycle, to produce toilet paper Kawasaki Steam Net Inc. intends to reuse steam from neighboring factories via pipelines to generate the thermal power plant's energy.

Carbon Challenge Kawasaki Eco-Strategy (CC Kawasaki)
Through the application previous experience and unique characteristics, alongside the cooperative efforts of local residents, business entities and the city administration, the Carbon Challenge Kawasaki Eco-Strategy (CC Kawasaki) in an initiative that aims to build a self-sustaining society that shapes harmony between the "environment" and the "economy."

1. Utilize the experience and advantages of Kawasaki to promote environmental measures.
2. Contribute environmental technology to the globe.
3. Cooperate with various organizations to reduce CO2 emissions.

 Environmental Technology Accumulates in Kawasaki

Throughout Kawasaki, several business entities are pursuing the implementation and development of cutting edge environmental technology that will reduce CO2 emissions and make efficient use of both energy and resources. Various corporations and research & development organizations in the coastal area are also utilizing this high-end environmental technology to promote an effective cycle that can harness both the waste produced and the energy needed at factories.

 Contributing Overseas Through World-Class Technology

There are initiatives to contribute globally to environmental countermeasures and anti-pollution technology, including cutting-edge environmental technology, by carrying them to the world stage. In May 2008, Kawasaki founded the Global Environment Knowledge Centre, which is designed to transmit information on environmental technology for its domestic and international counterparts. In October of the same year, Kawasaki promoted its environmental advancements at the Eco Expo Asia (International Trade Fair on Environmental Protection) in Hong Kong. In February of 2009, the city hosted the Kawasaki International ECO-tech Fair 2009 and simultaneously, with support from UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme), the 5th Asia-Pacific Eco-Business Forum. Kawasaki is contributing a wide range of technology overseas, including world-class environmental technology.

 Thinking Globally while Acting Locally

Local efforts to protect the environment are spreading out. In the summer of 2008, the CC Kawasaki Children Environmental Meeting was held with the participation of junior high school students. A solar power generation facility at the Kawasaki International Center (Nakahara Ward), known as the "Citizen-initiated Ohisama Solar Power Station," was established by contributions from local residents and businesses. Various other local projects such as the "Green Curtain Campaign" and "Kawasaki Water Sprinkling Campaign" are also underway.

An environmental meeting for children was held as a part of the CC Kawasaki Environmental Meeting in July 2008.
