Where History and Progress Find Harmony

The Takatsu Ward is blessed with the green surroundings of the Tama Hills and the beautiful currents of the Tama River and the Nikaryo Aqueduct.

During the Edo period (1603-1867), this area prospered as a lodging site on the Oyama Road, drawing many commoner people on special pilgrimages known as the Oyama Moude.

Thus, through thus frequent interaction among such a diverse array of people from all over the country, the community evolved into a cultural hub that produced a number of iconic individuals. In fact, this area was the birthplace of the poet Kanoko Okamoto, ceramic artist and National Living Treasure Shoji Hamada, and the internationally renowned artist Taro Okamoto, who is recognized as a distinguished citizen of Kawasaki.

Complementing its historic and cultural assets, the Takatsu Ward is also devoting itself to support the development of high-tech industries in the manufacturing sector by acting as the host to many small- to mid-sized companies in the assembly and processing industries. The Takatsu Ward continues to focus its urban planning on the creation of a happy and healthy community that makes full use of its rich in history and culture, as well as its abundant natural terrain.
