| In the Edo Period (1603-1867), the area currently known as the Kawasaki Ward flourished both as the final post station on the Tokaido Road for travelers heading to Edo (Tokyo) and as an important destination for pilgrims worshiping at the Kawasaki Daishi Heikenji Temple. Even today, Kawasaki Daishi remains one of the most popular and renowned temples in Japan.
In recent years, the Kawasaki Ward has also been developing as a center of culture and art, with on-location shoots for movies and dramas, as well as sponsoring their "Concerts for Anyone, Anytime" events. The coastal area of the Kawasaki Ward, a center of industry and trade as well as a popular recreational destination, has brought in numerous research institutes, including those related to the fields of environment and welfare. The concept of an "Industrial Museum" is also underway, which will showcase cutting edge technology along with industrial artifacts for the sake of education and tourism. Additionally, the Higashi Ohgishima East Park opened with an manmade sand beach in April 2008. Although the park is normally open to the public and used for community events, during emergency situations the park will play a particularly critical role as a disaster preparedness facility. |
