Foreign Registration

Foreigners who plan to stay in Japan for more than 90 days must register as a foreign resident at their local ward office. The application must be made in person, while for those who are under 16 years of age, adult family members of the same household must apply on their behalf. Note that branch offices only handle issuance of Certificate on Registered Matters and do not accept registration applications.

New Registration
Submit an application within 90 days of entry or within 60 days of birth.
Changes/Corrections in Registered Information
Report changes in registered information or mistakes found on your Foreign Resident Registration Certificate.
Registration Renewal(Confirmation), Re-issuance & Replacement of Certificate
Application for the renewal of certificate, confirmation of registered information, and re-issuance or replacement in the case that the certificate is damaged, soiled or lost.
Returning the Foreign Resident Registration Certificate
The certificate must be returned when a registered foreign resident leaves Japan, passes away, or is naturalized as a Japanese citizen.
