What to Do Before an Earthquake Happens

Japan has many earthquakes. It’s best to be prepared before one occurs.

Disaster-reduction Drill

The drills are held in your area to provide training in what to do in case of an earthquake. It is highly recommended that you take part in these drills. Check with Community Association, or ask a neighbor where and when the drills are held.

Talk to Your Family

Discuss the following with your family to help ensure everyone’s safety in the event of an earthquake.

  • Find the safest spot in your home
  • Determine what you take when you need to evacuate
  • Determine what each of your family should take
  • Find out where your nearest evacuation center is
(Nearby parks and elementary/junior high schools serve as evacuation centers).
  • Where to meet in the event of an earthquake
(Because you may not be together with your family when an earthquake occurs).

Food and Water

Help may not arrive for some time in the event of a major earthquake.
Keep a three-day supply of food and water.
