Community Associations(called “Jichikai”,”Chonaikai”)
These associations consist of people living in the same neighborhood, and most places have them. They are open to foreign residents, but it is your choice whether or not to join. If you join, it’s useful to receive a variety of information by “Kairanban”. The associations circulate ”Kairanban”(This is a special file that contains official announcements, community news, and more.) in the community, hold a festival and so on.
Read it as soon as you get it, take notes on anything important and make notes to your calendar, and then pass it on to the next house immediately.
Community associations may also hold evacuation drills in preparation for earthquakes, typhoons, floods, and so on.
Funds to cover expenses related to festivals, evacuation drills, etc., are collected from association members. These fees are called “Chonai-kai-hi” or “Jichi-kai-hi.”
Ask a neighbor for details if you want to join.
