Question.

I would like to find out more about child-rearing allowance(kodomo teate).

Answer.

Qualifications for child-rearing allowance(kodomo teate) and how to apply are as follows.

1. Qualifications:
Families with children that have not yet completed their 3th year of junior high school.
Both of guardians who apply child-rearing allowance and children live in Japan.
(All the qualifications must be met)
2. Where you can apply: At your nearest ward office or branch office
(1) At the Residents Section of any ward office
(2) At the Residents Section of any branch office
3. How to apply: Directly over the counter
4. Business Hours: 8:30 - 17:00, Monday-Friday.
8:30am - 12:30pm, 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month (at the ward office only).
5. Holidays: 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturday of the month, Sunday, national holidays, December 29-January 3.
(Branch offices are not open on Sat.)
6. What to bring:
(1) Seal (Anything other than a Shachihata)
(2) Bankbook in the name of the applicant
(3) Health Insurance Card or National Pension Certificate of the applicant (persons that have joined an employee's pension scheme)
(4) Certificate of Common Living (Whereby a parent is responsible for the well being of a child but living separately. In the event the child is living outside the city you will also require the residents register without omitted informationfor all members living at that address.)
7 About payment
(1) Payment 
Before 3 years / After the age of 3, until the completion of elementary school (after the third child) : 15,000yen
After the age of 3, until the completion of elementary school (the first and second child) / Junior high schooler : 10,000yen
(The oldest child among the children up to the age of 18 or March 31 following their 18th birthday will be the first child. )
(2) The allowance will be provided from the next month of application.
*However, in the case that you apply the allowance in the next month of the date of birth or moving-in, and you apply the allowance within 15days from the next day of the date of birth or moving-in, the allowance will be provided from the month of application (a special case of end-of-the-month).
*Please note that the allowance will not be provided retroactively.
