How can I participate in the National Pension?

Answer

The procedure to participate in the National Pension (to be Category I insured person) is following. Depending on the condition, there is a possibility that we ask documents other than those listed below. Please contact for the details in advance.
* If you are Category II insured, please apply at your work place. If you are Category III insured, please apply at the work place of Category II insured person (a spouse).

1 Documents to be submitted: Written notice of acquisition of the pension qualification

2 Application Period: Generally in 14 days after the event occurs.

3 Where to apply: Ward Residents Division of the ward office in your area, Citizens Center at ward branch offices, or Division of National Health Insurance (NHI) in ward offices

4 Operating Hours: Monday to Friday 08:30 to 17:00

5 Closed: Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, Dec.29 to Jan. 3

6 How to apply: Directly at a service counter

7 Required Documents by reason to enroll
(1) When a person other than Category II and III insured person turns 20 years old
(a) Written notice of acquisition of the National Pension qualification (It will be mailed by a pension office in a month before your birthday month.)
(b) Seal (Not necessary when the applicant sings)

(2) When a person aged between 20 and 59 lost qualification of the Employees' Pension Insurance
(a) Pension book
(b) Seal (Not necessary when the applicant sings)
(c) Any documents containing the date of loss of the qualification (Certification of Loss of Qualification, a Separation Notice, etc.)

(3) When Category III insured person aged between 20 and 59 leaves the support of his/her spouse (For example, when the spouse retires, when divorce, when the income of such Category III insured person has increased, etc.)
(a) Pension book
(b) Seal (Not necessary when the applicant sings)
(c) Any documents containing the date of leaving the support (Certification of Loss of Qualification, etc.)
* When you are a voluntary continuously insured by a health insurance, etc., so you are not able to obtain the Certification of Loss of Qualification, please prepare any documents explaining your status with the Unemployment Insurance. (Qualification Certificate of the Unemployment Insurance, etc.)
*In case where it's because the spouse left his/her job, please prepare a Separation Notice issued for the spouse, etc.

(4) If you are Category III insured person aged between 20 and 59, and when the spouse participating in the Employees' Pension Insurance system turns 65 years old.
(a) Pension book
(b) Seal (Not necessary when the applicant sings)

(5) When a person other than Category II and III aged between 20 and 59 move in from other country
(a) Pension book
(b) Seal (not necessary when the applicant sings)
(c) Passport

(6) To enroll voluntarily
(a) Pension book
(b) Seal (Not necessary when the applicant sings)
* If you are 60 years old or older, there are other documents required. Please contact in advance.

(7) When a foreigner aged between 20 and 59 who has an address in Japan enrolls (Other than Category II and III insured persons)
(a) Seal (Only those who have it. Not necessary when the applicant sings)
(b) Resident Card (Foreign Resident Registration Card)
(c) Only those who are Category II or III insured person and also lost the qualification of the benefit are required any document to show the date of loss of the qualification such as the Certification of Loss of Qualification, a Separation Notice, etc.

* When a representative notifies, there are other documents required as follows.
・To a family member who lives together Identity verification documents of the representative and the applicant's seal for ink pads
・To a third party A letter of attorney, identity verification documents of the representative, and the applicant's seal for ink pads
